Jess’ Monthly Reflection

There were two full moons in May 2026.

When this happens, the second is called a Blue Moon.

My initial intention was to release a second full edition on business models to build on Rethinking the Economy.

But then two things happened.

I spent most of the month in a chronic illness flare. When this happens, which is thankfully infrequent, it's like my body's battery experiences a fault. No matter how much I 'recharge' (through rest, hydration and sleep), my battery remains in powersaver mode.

The second is that I started researching business models.

Each edition takes me roughly 15 hours to research, write and edit. Usually, after an hour's research, I have an idea of the direction the historical context will take, which then informs everything else.

This time, three hours into researching the history of business models, I was still confused. I learned there is no definitive list of business models, making a simple historical evolution difficult.

The simple reason for this is business model innovation. Despite ambiguity defining it, business model innovation involves changing the way you do business:

  • McDonald's developed the 'Speedee Service System' using the assembly line to make burgers (before transitioning into the real estate business).

  • Amazon created an online marketplace.

  • Netflix introduced subscriptions for DVD-by-mail services.

  • Google used algorithms to help people quickly sort through online content.

  • Facebook turned social media into an attention economy.

The more accurate reason is more complicated: the concept of a business model lacks theoretical grounding in economics or business studies.

It was at this point in my research that I realised a Blue Moon is not the right time to try and untangle the complicated web that is business models.

So this edition is just an intro.

I considered pushing forward and releasing something, but I believe I can't share something before I understand it myself. That means I've got 29 days to understand business models...

Let me know if there are any business models you're curious about (they might make the final cut!).

Hope you enjoyed the May Blue MicroMoon (the next one won’t occur until 2053!).

PS Fun fact, the phrase 'Once in a Blue Moon' comes from the fact that a Blue Moon occurs approximately once every two years
